Sign Up NowIf You Don’t Know Me By Now was released in 1989 as the second single from Simply Red’s third studio album A New Flame. It was a huge commercial hit, giving the band their second US number 1, and reaching number 2 in the UK charts. It even won a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best R&B Song.
If You Don’t Know Me by Now was originally written for musical trio Labelle, but was never recorded. The song’s composers Leon Gamble and Kenny Huff gave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes instead. It became their first hit when they released it in 1972.
Simply Red’s version of the song has a simple yet beautiful orchestration with a two-part harmony, which shows off Hucknall’s smooth and emotive vocals, more apparent on the 2025 Recollections version of the track than ever before.

If you don’t know me by now
You will never never never know me
All the things
That we’ve been through
You should understand me
Like I understand you
Now girl I know the difference
Between right and wrong
I ain’t gonna do nothing
To break up our happy home
Don’t get so excited
When I come home
A little late at night
Cos we only act like children
When we argue fuss and fight
If you don’t know me by now
You will never never never know me
We’ve all got our
Own funny moods
I’ve got mine,
Woman you’ve got yours too
Just trust in me like I trust in you
As long as we’ve been together
It should be so easy to do
Just get yourself together
Or we might as well say goodbye
What good is a love affair
When you can’t see eye to eye
If you don’t know me by now
You will never
Never never know me
