Sign Up Now‘Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye’ is the fourth single from Simply Red’s 1987 album Men & Women. It’s a jazz ballad written by Cole Porter in 1944, and has been covered by a number of artists since then, including Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and John Coltrane.
The official video mixes archive war-time footage with shots of Mick performing the track. Mick also performed ‘Ev’ry Time’ in August 1988 at Old Trafford in front of a crowd of 55,210 people to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Munich air disaster.
Mick produced the Simply Red version of the song himself alongside Yvonne Ellis – it has a simple yet powerful composition that shows off Mick’s vocals – more evident than ever in the 2025 Recollections version of the song.

Ev’ry time we say goodbye I die a little
Ev’ry time we say goodbye I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above me who must be in the know
Think so little of me they allow you to go
When you’re near there’s such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere waiting to sing about it
There’s no love song finer
But how strange The change from major to minor
Ev’ry time we say goodbye.
When you’re near there’s such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere waiting to sing about it
There’s no love song finer
But how strange The change from major to minor
Ev’ry time we say goodbye.
