Sign Up Now‘A New Flame’ is the title track and third single from Simply Red’s third studio album, released in 1989. It was written by Mick Hucknall and produced by Stewart Levine, and was described by Music & Media magazine as “a song that recalls the best days of Motown, while at the same time it sounds thoroughly modern”.
The New Flame album was a huge hit globally; it won the band their first UK Number 1 album, and was certified 7x Platinum by the BPI for sales of 2,100,000 copies in the UK alone. ‘A New Flame’ remains to this day a fan favourite and highlight of Simply Red’s live show, and the 2025 Recollections recording of the track sounds more modern and vibrant than ever.

So What Ltd/SBK Songs Ltd
I was bowled out
I was sold down the river
And her warm heart
Would turn me forever
She’s turned me round
A new flame has come
And nothing she can do
Can do me wrong
I am stern now
Petty words
Don’t believe me
But her warm smile
Is never gonna leave me
She’s turned me round
A new flame has come
And nothing she can do
Can do me wrong
Wrong oh no
Wrong oh no
She’s made of real glass
She got real real emotion
But my heart laughs
I have that same
Sweet devotion
She’s turned me round
A new flame has come
And nothing she can do
Can do me wrong
Wrong oh no
Wrong oh no
Nothing she can do
Can ever do me wrong
